Terry Fox Runs set for this weekend

Communities across Midwestern Ontario will host the annual Terry Fox Run this Sunday.

The Terry Fox Run starts at 9 a.m. on Sunday from the Kincardine Davidson Centre, and at 10 a.m. from Harrison Park Bandshell in Owen Sound.

In Goderich, the Terry Fox Run is slated to start at 1 p.m. at Kinsmen Centre.

In Wingham, participants are to meet at the Lions Picnic Shelter Sunday for an 11 a.m. start time.    People can choose a three, five or 10-kilometre route.

Runs from the Listowel Ag Hall, Hanover Park, Port Elgin Northshore Pavilion, and Clinton Millennium Park head out at 1 p.m.

In Wiarton, OPP Auxiliary Officer John Thomas and his wife Nicole have been organizing the local Terry Fox Run. The group is meeting at Bluewater Park Train Station Pavilion at 1 p.m. for registration and the event will kick off at 2 p.m.

"Next year will be our fifth year organizing and executing the run, it has been very rewarding. The community has been great and the businesses have been supportive. As we move forward we are looking for others to come on board and help out with the event. If you are interested, feel free to speak to Nicole or myself," added John Thomas.

The runs celebrate the legacy of Terry Fox, an athlete from British Columbia who lost a leg to a rare form of cancer as a teenager.

To raise money for cancer research, he started the Marathon of Hope in 1980, with the goal to run across Canada on an artificial leg. Fox was forced to stop his run near Thunder Bay, when his cancer spread to his lungs. Fox died in 1981.

It's estimated there are about 700 runs being held across Canada this weekend to raise money for cancer research.

There are numerous other runs and walks in Huron, Perth, Bruce, Wellington and Grey Counties on Sunday to raise money for cancer research. Students at many local schools will get involved in runs, walks, and other fundraising events next week.
