Local board affected by more rotating teacher strikes

By Fiona Robertson

Students across Ontario are out of class on Tuesday while teachers participate in another strike.

All Catholic schools, including those in the Huron-Perth Catholic District School Board, are closed. Due to strikes by the Elementary Teacher's Federation of Ontario (ETFO), schools in the Avon Maitland District School Board are closed as well.

Over 50 local educators picketed outside of Huron-Bruce MPP Lisa Thompson's constituency office in Blyth, hoping to send a message.

"The cuts are devastating," said Steve Lane, secondary unit president for the Huron-Perth Catholic District School Board. "Yesterday we had a bargaining day with the province. Catholic teachers met, and we're a little disappointed that we weren't able to come to a resolution."

A local representative from ETFO called the situation "frustrating." He said teachers are defending the students' right to education, and if they don't take a stand, it "sets a precedent" that it's okay to make cuts.

Another strike day is set for Thursday, February 6, that will see province-wide closures for ETFO schools.
