Service delivery review in Huron County

The mayor of Huron East says he hopes all of the county's lower-tier municipalities get involved in the county's Service Delivery Review.

Bernie MacLellan said any organization, from government to private business, tends to get a little complacent when they've had something in place for a period of time and assume they're always doing it correctly. But he aid he believes there are benefits to bringing a third party in, to do a study of the services the county provides to the ratepayers.

“By hiring a third party to come in and to a real in-depth study of, not only all of the services that the county provides to the ratepayers, but if we can get our partner municipalities to also be involved in this, hopefully, there would even be recommendations of things where we could have more shared services.”

Maclellan added he knows of a few situations where sharing services has saved all of the municipalities involved a significant amount of money.

MacLellan said the county's paying for the review, so the only cost to the municipalities is the time they put into it.

But he maintained that the higher number of lower tiers that work with the county in providing the information, the better the information will be.

“The more lower tiers that work with the county in providing this information, the better the information will be. Now at the end of the day, when the recommendations come through, it'll be up to each individual lower tier whether they want to follow those recommendations or not. Nobody's hands will be tied.”
