Provincial government pauses residential evictions during stay-at-home order

The provincial government has put a pause on all residential evictions during the now in effect stay-at-home order.

As of midnight this morning (January 14th), the province has a stay-at-home order in effect for all Ontarians, only allowing essential travel for groceries, pharmacy visits, doctor visits and medical appointments or exercise. During this time, all residential evictions will be on temporary pause to ensure no one is without a place to live during the intensified lockdown measures. This is the second time in less than a year that the province has paused residential evictions.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Ontario has put a number of measures in place to protect homeowners or renters. That includes freezing rent rates for 2021, Changes to the Residential Tenancies Act also require the Landlord and Tenant Board to consider whether a landlord attempted to negotiate a repayment agreement, before resorting to an eviction for non-payment of rent during COVID-19.
