Environment Canada Warning Preparedness Meteorologist Peter Kimbell says reports of a polar vortex affecting Midwestern Ontario's weather system are exaggerated.
He says colder weather is moving into Midwestern Ontario with lower temperatures expected to settle in for a while.
He explained, "when you talk about the polar vortex, it conjures up the perception of a deep freeze and extreme cold warnings. That's probably not going to be the case just yet. Because what we're expected is something more normal for this time of year."
He added, "normal being a high of minus one and the lows overnight would be minus 8, so normal winter like temperatures next week, probably colder than normal by next weekend, so I'm talking about the 22nd and 23rd (of January)."
Still, Kimbell says polar vortex is perhaps too strong of a term for what we are expecting.
He pointed out the last week of January and first weeks of February are typically the coldest of the year.
