Huron County is promoting hygge

Winter can be a very lonely and isolating time for many people and when you frame that around the current pandemic, this become a very challenging winter.

Huron County's Economic Development Department is hoping to address both of this issues with the launch of the Huron Hygge, pronounced hoo-gah. It's a Danish word that emphasizes coziness, self-care and well-being, especially through the long, winter months.

Huron County Warden, Glen McNeil acknowledged that it does all of that at a time when it's really needed.

"It is intended to provide comfort, contentment and well-being and to engage in safe and enjoyable activities, whether it be virtual classes, online concerts," McNeil said.

He added, it also encourages people to enjoy things like cross-country ski trails or hiking trails, which can be found throughout Huron County.

"The other part of it is the opportunity to support our local businesses, by curb-side pick up and also our local restaurants when it comes to take-out. If we look after each other and look out for each other, we are one day closer to receiving the vaccine."

Some Huron Hygge activities include:

  •  Virtual classes and workshops with local businesses
  •  Crafting kits and tutorials
  •  Livestreamed weekly concerts coinciding with local restaurant take-out promotion
  •  Outdoor parks and hiking trail promotion
  •  Huron Hygge Boxes for purchase, stocked with cozy items from local businesses
  •  Online author readings hosted by the Huron County Library
