Huron County mayor looks at modernization following funding announcement

Central Huron Mayor, Jim Ginn, says a recent announcement from the Province regarding funding for municipal modernization generated some discussion at the recent virtual ROMA conference.

Ginn says the funding would allow municipalities to hire a third-party consultant to review how they deliver the services they provide, or they could use the funding to support the sharing of services with neighbouring municipalities.

"We share a fire chief with Bluewater, we share a building inspector with Huron East. But maybe we need to go even further than that, maybe things like recreation."

Ginn suggests now might be a good time to look at something like recreation across the county

"Maybe we need to look at how many arenas we have and ball diamonds and soccer fields, not just with other municipalities but with organizations like school boards own a lot of recreational facilities too whether it be soccer fields, track and field and pools."

Ginn says through the pandemic municipalities have worked a little closer and now might be a good time to explore the potential for efficiencies in different areas and if they find some, there is now some provincial funding to support it.
