The Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation is currently accepting registrations for its Coastal Conservation Youth Corps program.
Education Technician Kerry Kennedy says the program is for high school aged students that offers hands-on learning opportunities about coastal processes and resiliency for the coast.
“So they can learn about coastal processes, resiliency for the coast and hopefully take that knowledge forward with them, either to inform post-secondary school choices or career choices or to use and advocate for resilience in their own community,” said Kennedy.
The program consists of several different activities.
“One activity is doing a shoreline clean up, but beyond that, on that same day looking at micro plastics and micro plastics pollution, so actually collecting water samples, analyzing and looking for those minuscule micro plastics,” added Kennedy.
Kennedy says another day is all about eco-system restoration.
In Goderich, there's a large dune on the main beach that the four different sessions were held last year and they have been working on restoring it to a naturalized dune.
This year they'll design their own restoration plan.
Kennedy says there is a one week-long program in Goderich and three in Saugeen Shores.
The program runs July 5th to the 9th and there are two weekend sessions in Goderich in September.
