The Mayor of Goderich presented a recommendation to Goderich council this week that it considers putting money into a restrictive reserve dedicated to affordable housing initiatives.
John Grace says that would allow them to then go out to the private sector or one of the upper tier governments, whether it's the county or the province, and look for partnerships in order to start dealing with the housing crisis, specifically in Goderich.
Grace points out there are currently over 300 people looking for affordable housing in Goderich alone.
“We can attract all of the housing you want, but can we attract affordable housing and maybe, the town of Goderich needs to get in the business of putting those partnerships together. It is so important for all businesses in the Goderich area,” said Grace.
Grace says the town has to grow but there has to be a balance that includes affordable housing.
He also points out that businesses are looking for employees but it's difficult to attract them if there is no place for them to live.
The recommendation will be discussed at a July meeting.
