Bruce County reviews electric vehicle charging report

Bruce County is currently reviewing its Clean Vehicle Strategy for County-owned vehicles. At their meeting last week, councillors reviewed a report called ‘Plugging in: Why Bruce, Grey, and Huron must prepare for an electric vehicle future’.  The report from the Nuclear Innovation Institute looked at the travel behaviours of electric car owners and the importance of EV charging station availability.

Bruce County has a Memorandum of Understanding to establish an electric vehicle charging station network strategy with Wellington County. That is aimed at bridging the gap between Highway 401, Lake Huron, and Georgian Bay. Proposed enhancements to Bruce County’s Spruce the Bruce Program will explore how to support sustainable and net zero emissions initiatives like EV station installations.

Bruce County’s draft Master Transportation Plan (MTP), endorsed in July 2021, will support clean energy for transportation solutions and a move to net zero emissions. In addition to electricity, the County MTP will support hydrogen and recycled natural gas solutions. However, that did not include the sighting of EV charging stations.
