Local police services have received grant money for new technology.
Perth-Wellington MPP Matthew Rae says the Stratford Police Service will be receiving $169,570 in funding to incorporate Automated License Plate Recognition Technology (ALPRT) into their fleet. The Guelph Police Service will also receive $524,008. The technology will make officers aware of expired plates on vehicles out on the roadways, and can also detect stolen plates or plates registered to suspended drivers. Additionally, vehicles associated with AMBER alerts can also be identified.
With Ontario recently abandoning sticker renewal programs for license plates, this technology allows police to scan plates without having to see a physical sticker or plate validation.
“This funding will help provide our local police services with the tools they need to improve road safety in our communities,” Matthew Rae, Perth-Wellington MPP said. “The safety of our communities is paramount, that is why this investment is so important.”
“This investment further demonstrates our government’s plan to ensure police services across Ontario have the resources and equipment they need to keep our communities safe,” said Solicitor General Michael Kerzner. “I am confident that this tool will be a tremendous asset to police services and help them combat incidents of auto theft and enhance public safety.”
