UPDATE: Kincardine council passes vandalism support for local businesses

Some financial relief is on the way for the Kincardine businesses that were vandalized earlier this month.

At Monday night's council meeting, members approved a motion to provide $5,500 in funding to support the downtown businesses that saw their store front windows smashed on June 6.

The funding will be matched by Bruce County, through its Spruce the Bruce program, so each of the 11 eligible stores can apply for up to $1,000 in support if the motion passes.

“Bruce County is pleased to partner with the Municipality of Kincardine to support affected businesses when they need it most,” said Jeffrey Loney, manager of economic development. “Spruce the Bruce is a program designed to help build healthy and vibrant communities by offering resources to maintain and grow commercial spaces. We are happy to adapt the program to make this happen.”

Interested business owners need to apply for a façade grant through Spruce the Bruce, but the municipality says it will communicate with those who are eligible.

A 39-year-old man from the Niagara region is currently facing 11 charges of mischief in relation to the downtown vandalism.
