New Bruce County development charges take effect

New buildings will now cost more in Bruce County.

New development charges take effect this year, as the county did not receive any appeals to the By-law by the appeal period deadline of January 2, 2024.

The county will phase in the extra fees over a 10-year period, with only 25% of the new charge being in effect in 2024.

Municipal officials say the revenue will fund the new growth-related infrastructure and will reduce the need to increase property taxes.

According to a report to county council, by 2031, the full charge will add $7,655 to the cost of a single dwelling unit, and add $2.94 per square foot of non-residential construction. That's expected to bring in $3.1 million a year in revenue. Non-profit housing, affordable homes and rentals will be exempt.

Huron-Kinloss, Kincardine, Saugeen Shores, and South Bruce Peninsula have their own development charges as well.
