Teen scammer caught in Stratford

The Stratford Police Service (SPS) says it has arrested a Brampton teen who allegedly defrauded several residents using the "grandparent scam."

According to police, they received three complaints since Friday of the scam. In the first two incidents, the victims were contacted by a man claiming to be a police officer, who said their grandsons had been arrested and bail was required for their release. Later that day, the scammer came to their residence to collect money in excess of $7,000. Police were contacted after the victims realized it was a scam.

In the third incident, the victim contacted their grandson's family before the scammer came to collect and police were notified.

Officers attended before the scheduled meet up and arrested the suspect. The 18-year-old from Brampton is now facing charges for three counts of fraud over $5,000 and three counts of extortion.

SPS ask that residents contact them if and when similar incidents occur at 519-271-4141.
