Damage from a weekend fire at Kincardine's Durham Market Square is estimated at $2.5 million.
There were no injuries due to the challenging fire at 330 Durham Market Square South that was called in at 6:40 a.m. on Saturday, July 6th, 2024.
Heavy smoke prompted the evacuation of neighbouring homes and Victoria Park. That meant the postponement of the Kincardine Scottish Festival and Highland Games.
Matt Cottrill, Acting Fire Chief, said the fire was challenging due to the construction of the building and origin of the fire, but by 12:30 p.m. crews had the situation under control and the Kincardine Scottish Festival and Highland Games events in Victoria Park could resume.
Cottrill added the Ontario fire Marshal was contacted but the cause is not being considered suspicious.
In all, 34 firefighters helped battle the blaze. Kincardine Fire and Emergency Services (KFES) responded along with he Tiverton station was called in to support.
Mutual aid provided by the Ripley station from the Huron-Kinloss Fire and Emergency Services team, and the Port Elgin station from the Town of Saugeen Shores Fire Department. They provided four additional fire apparatus including Saugeen Shores’ aerial truck. Kempton Construction provided an excavator. South Bruce Ontario Provincial Police (O.P.P.), Bruce County Emergency Medical Services (EMS), were also on the scene.
