Local hockey legend Doug Kennedy passes away

The local hockey world has lost a huge presence.

Doug Kennedy, instrumental in so many different facets of local hockey in Midwestern Ontario, passed away this week.

Kennedy was a fixture at rinks around the region, and was a former Kincardine Bulldogs General Manager and longtime PJHL official. The Kincardine Bulldogs program wouldn't exist without Kennedy's drive and passion, as he was a key cog in establishing the program.

Over the last few years, Kennedy served as the Northern Conference Director for the PJHL and took care of a host of different league tasks. He was always seemingly at the rink, sharing stories and taking time for everyone, including our crew here at CKNX Jr Hockey.

We simply wouldn't have had the access we've enjoyed and the stories over the years without Doug and his hard work ensuring the league and all the teams were well taken care of. He was always willing to share insight, a story, or his thoughts on the game in general. I can say for myself, with his knowledge and passion for junior hockey, he made me want to be better.

Doug also played a significant role in establishing the new senior league, now known as the Ontario Elite Hockey League. The league, alongside many teams, players and other leagues, shared numerous tributes to Kennedy across social media.

In 2023, Kennedy was rightfully awarded the OHA's prestigious Golden Stick Award. The award is given as an honour of merit by the OHA to a person for outstanding service to the game other than as a player. Sums up Doug to a tee, I'd say.

Also, not surprisingly, Doug served as a councillor in his beloved home of Kincardine, further putting his stamp on public service and helping others.

Doug, you were one-of-a-kind, and your passion and dedication to hockey in this region will not be forgotten. Condolences to all of Doug's family and friends, of whom there were many, during this difficult time.
