Stratford General Hospital declares COVID outbreak

A COVID-19 outbreak was declared in the Medicine Unit at Stratford General Hospital on Wednesday morning.

The Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance (HPHA) says the unit is now closed to admissions until further notice.

HPHA notes that outbreak status refers to two or more confirmed cases among patients that could have possibly been acquired in the hospital.

The healthcare alliance says it is working in collaboration with Huron Perth Public Health to manage the outbreak and that patients, families, caregivers and team members that may be affected are being notified. Testing of patients is also taking place.

During the outbreak, family and caregiver presence on the unit will be restricted. Patients may only have visitor per day with no in-and-out privileges, and they will be required to wear personal protective equipment including mask, eye protection, gown and gloves.

"As we enter cold and flu season, it's important to remember that COVID-19 is still circulating in our communities," said Erica Jensen, Manager Quality, Patient Safety and Infection Control. "Please take the necessary steps to stay healthy, such as washing your hands regularly, coughing or sneezing into your elbow, and staying home if you're feeling unwell. If you're sick, avoid visiting hospitals to help protect others."

The public will be notified when the outbreak is declared over.
