Grey-Bruce residents returned more than 170 expired pharmaceuticals during last week’s 'Attacking Medication Misuse' campaign.
The event is a partnership between Grey Bruce Public Health, the Owen Sound Attack, and Rexall Pharma Plus, aimed to remind the public that the safest way to dispose of medications that are no longer required is to return them to a pharmacy.
A variety of medications were returned, including prescribed opioids, benzodiazepines, sedatives, and steroids.
In exchange, participants received a combined 150 vouchers for free Owen Sound Attack home game tickets.
"Expired and unused prescription medications are often left in medicine cabinets, which can lead to their potential misuse," said Monica Blair, Manager of Grey Bruce Public Health’s Harm Reduction Team. "Individuals may inadvertently take unused prescription medications that are no longer effective or can have dangerous interactions with other medications or medical conditions. Some prescription drugs also have the potential for abuse. Returning these medications to a pharmacy ensures they are disposed of safely."
The campaign ran from November 25 to 29.
All pharmacies will accept old or unused medications year-round and ensure they are disposed of properly and in a safe and environmentally friendly manner.
