Eagle Lake First Nation has launched a Federal Court challenge against the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO), reigniting debate over a proposed underground nuclear waste repository.
The legal action, filed on December 20, 2024, seeks to overturn the NWMO’s decision to select the Revell Lake site in Northern Ontario for a deep geological repository.
Eagle Lake claims they were unfairly excluded from the site selection process, alleging procedural unfairness and bad faith. The First Nation argues this exclusion violates constitutional protections for Indigenous rights and international commitments under the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).
The Municipality of South Bruce voted to become a willing host for the repository in October, with 51.2 percent voting in favour. However the community exited the site selection process in November.
