Bruce County residents need winter emergency kits

As winter settles in with heavy snow and freezing rain, Bruce County’s Emergency Management division is reminding residents to prepare or refresh their home emergency kits.

According to a media release from the county, these kits are vital to keeping households safe and comfortable during power outages or other emergencies caused by severe winter weather.

"Extra consideration should be taken for your home emergency kit during the winter months," said Ray Lux, Bruce County Emergency Management Coordinator. "Power outages can have more implications for your family with cold weather. Make sure your kit has the appropriate supplies to help keep your family safe and warm in the event of a power failure during a winter storm."

Bruce County recommends including the following items in your winter emergency kit:

  • A backup generator for essential lighting and heating needs. If a generator isn’t an option, designate a single room to retain heat and keep the door closed.

  • Warm blankets or thermal blankets, as well as wool socks, mitts, and hats.

  • At least one flashlight with extra batteries to provide light during outages.

  • Non-perishable food and water supplies to sustain your household.

Winter storms can cause downed power lines, leading to prolonged outages. By preparing an emergency kit with winter-specific items, families can remain safe and resilient during cold-weather challenges.
