Huron-Perth Public Health issues cold warning

As frigid temperatures move into the Huron-Perth region, the local health unit is issuing a reminder of the risks cold weather can cause.

According to Environment Canada, windchill temperatures of -12 to -22°C are expected across the region, with the coldest levels occurring overnight.

Huron Perth Public Health (HPPH) is issuing a reminder that not only can the cold pose risks for cold-related injuries, including frostnip, frostbite, and hypothermia, it can also can worsen existing health conditions, particularly those affecting the heart or lungs.

The health unit offers these tips to help prevent injuries:

Check the weather before going out: Keep children indoors when it's -27°C or colder (including wind chill).

Check on others: Ensure friends, family, and neighbors are warm and safe, both indoors and outdoors.

Dress appropriately: Wear layers, including a hat, gloves, a scarf, warm socks, and waterproof boots.

Recognize cold injuries: Be aware of frostnip, frostbite, and hypothermia. Monitor vulnerable individuals for symptoms.

Stay warm and dry: Seek shelter from the cold and take breaks indoors. Change into dry clothing if you get wet, and drink warm beverages (avoid alcohol and caffeine).

Travel safely: Avoid icy roads and low visibility. Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle. Never pour water on your windshield to clear ice.

The Health Unit says people at the greatest risk are those experiencing homelessness, older adults, infants, children, and people with pre-existing health conditions.

For relief from cold temperatures locally, check with your municipality to find available warming spaces near you.
