Blowing, drifting snow leads to road closures, bus cancellations

Strong winds and blowing snow made for a slow morning commute on Friday.

Several roads had to be closed due to the poor conditions, including Highway 21 between Amberley and Tiverton, Highway 9 between Cemetery Road near Walkerton and West Heritage Street outside Clifford, and Concession 7 from Highway 21 to Bruce County Road 23 in the Municipality of Kincardine.

All school buses in Bruce and Grey counties, except those in Lucknow, were cancelled for the day. There were also a few cancellations in Huron-Perth. The full list of closures and cancellations can be found online on the CKNXNewsToday.ca closures page.

Environment Canada has a snow squall warning in effect for Bruce Peninsula and North Grey County where another 10 to 20 centimetres of snow could fall through the afternoon before conditions begin to improve in the evening.

Strong winds that have been gusting up to 80 kilometres an hour since Thursday night will ease late in the morning.

Grey County, Bruce County, the Township of Georgian Bluffs, and the Municipality of Kincardine have declared a significant weather event due to poor conditions. The declaration notifies the public that it will take crews longer than usual to bring the condition of the roads back to a state of repair. In Bruce Peninsula, police have advised not to drive unless it is necessary due to near zero visibility on the roads.
