Online scam costs Grey-Bruce resident $63K in cash, gold

A Grey-Bruce resident has been scammed out of a significant amount of cash and gold.

According to Grey-Bruce OPP, the person contacted police on Monday to report the incident which began when they clicked on a pop-up that appeared on their computer. The pop-up linked the individual to people who were posing as Microsoft representatives. They requested banking information from the victim and then used it to steal more than $63,000 in cash and gold.

The incident has again prompted police to remind the public use extreme caution and skepticism when dealing with unsolicited communications.

"Be vigilant regarding unsolicited online messages, phone calls, or emails requesting personal or financial information, or demanding urgent action," police said. "Reputable companies and financial institutions will never request remote access to your computer or demand payment in the form of gold, gift cards or cryptocurrency."

Anyone who believes they had fallen victim to a scam can report it to OPP at 1-888-310-1122 and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
