Nuclear Waste Management survey open until June 6

The Nuclear Waste Management Organization is seeking the public's input on its five-year strategic plan.

The NWMO released the implementation plan for 2025 - 2029 in late March, which outlines its plans for the next five years.

Now, a survey is available to allow people to comment on the strategy to create a safe, long-term management system for intermediate and high-level radioactive waste. The survey is available until June 6.

The NWMO reported that the responses will guide its work, and any resulting changes or clarifications, along with a summary of responses, will be reflected in the next implementation plan, which will be released in spring 2026.

Part of the plan includes advancing planning for a second deep geological repository for long-term management of intermediate-level and non-fuel high-level waste, as well as the possibility of used nuclear fuel from new nuclear projects. Over the next five years, the NWMO will begin work toward site selection for the second DGR.

This follows a decision last year to store used nuclear fuel at a DGR in Ignace, in Northwestern Ontario.

South Bruce was the other community in the selection process, and voted in favour of the project in a referendum.
