North Huron examining its accommodation capacity

The Township of North Huron will undergo a review of its accommodation capacity, as staff say its seeing a steady increase in tourism and travel over recent years.

At Monday's meeting, council heard that there was concerns about a lack of overnight accommodations in the area as things like Blyth Festival, seasonal events, and sports tournaments continue to grow.

CAO Nelson Santos said the goal of the study would be to ensure the Township is positioned to meet both current and future accommodation needs.

"Is there a lack of accommodation? Is there an opportunity to provide a new investment within the region, whether its a hotel or other overnight accommodations?" he told council. "The data that's collected will be part of the structure and the cause for the potential business case for a new investment in that area."

Councillor Mitch Wright said he can say from past experience there is a need for more spaces in Wingham.

"It was a barrier when I was involved in the Alice Munro Festival," he said. "It was a barrier they had about organizing and holding a lot of the events in Wingham, was the lack of accommodations, not only for people attending but for guest authors as well."

Santos accepted the proposal from CBRE to conduct the feasibility study, for around $15,000.
