Members of the Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation will head to the polls Friday to elect a new band council.
Voting will take place from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the community centre in Neyaashiinigmiing, where eligible voters will select nine councillors for a two-year term.
Darlene Johnston has been acclaimed as Chief, after candidate Steven Lavalley withdrew his nomination. Johnston was one of nine nominees initially put forward for the role, which included outgoing Chief Greg Nadjiwon and several former councillors.
A total of 27 candidates are running for the nine available council seats. The list includes several current and past members of council, as well as community members from across the First Nation.
The Chippewas of Nawash holds council elections every two years. The current term expires this summer.
