The historic Harmony Centre in Owen Sound is stepping up efforts to secure funding for urgent building upgrades to ensure it remains a vital community hub.
A recent review revealed heavy usage of the centre, with more than 26,000 visits annually, counting rentals, events, rehearsals, performances, and drop-ins, the 150-year-old building is showing the wear of constant activity, particularly in its Lower Hall.
The popular hall has reached a critical point, with worn flooring now requiring full replacement to remain safe, functional, and welcoming for the many groups that use it each day. To address this, Harmony Centre has launched a fundraising campaign aimed at supporting the essential renovation.
“We’ve always known Harmony Centre was busy, but this number really put it into perspective," said Operations Manager Amy Stewart. "26,000 visits a year tell us that people are using this building constantly. It’s wonderful to see, but it also means we have to take very good care of the space if we want it to continue serving the community.”
The Lower Hall floor replacement is the top priority for 2026. The project promises to enhance safety, accessibility, appearance, and durability, ensuring the space can serve the community for decades to come.
Jeff Elie, Chair of the Board of Directors, emphasized the responsibility of maintaining the building.
“Harmony Centre belongs to the community, and we treat that responsibility seriously,” he added. “This building is one of Owen Sound’s busiest gathering places, and if we want it to keep supporting the work of so many groups, we must maintain it with care. The Lower Hall upgrade is essential and it’s something we can achieve together.”
The Centre is inviting residents, businesses, and supporters to contribute to the flooring campaign, helping ensure Harmony Centre remains a vibrant home for creativity, culture, and community connection. Donations and further information are available at harmonycentre.ca.
