People across Canada were urged to join a national day of action organized by Arms Embargo Now.
Local organizer Tamara Sargent said residents gathered outside Grey Bruce MP Alex Ruff’s Owen Sound office during Tuesday's lunch hour, asking him to support Bill C-233, the No More Loopholes Act. A vote is expected to be held on Bill C-233 later this month.
Sargent said they asked Ruff to pick a side.
"Will they continue to funnel unrestricted and unregulated arms to Trump's illegal wars, ICE's campaign of terror and Israel's ongoing genocide?" asked Sargent. "Or will they listen to the Canadian public and ensure that Canadian military exports are aligned with international law?"
Sargent said last year's report from Arms Embargo Now sparked a lot of concern.
"It revealed that despite the Canadian Government declaring that no Canadian-made weapons would be shipped to Israel while they're conducting genocide, that these weapon components still were getting to Israel through the United States," she explained.
Sargent added Ruff did submit her petition to the government last year, which had over 600 signatures of constituents who do not want Canadian weapons funnelled to support genocide and illegal wars.
She said Ruff has said he will take the information into consideration while discussing the issue with his colleagues.
"If he is still considering his position, now is the time for constituents to speak clearly," she concluded.
