Canada Earns Silver In Deaflympics Hockey

Brucefield's Jesse McIntyre comes home with a silver medal. Team Canada fell 6-3 to Russia in the final game of the Deaflympics hockey competition on Sunday.

Canada was undefeated heading into the final game, winning all 4 game in the round robin. They opened the tournament with a 4-2 win against the USA before beating Kazakhstan 14-0, Finland 7-1 and Russia 2-1.

The host Russians managed to get revenge from that 2-1 loss on Saturday, leading 4-2 late in the gold medal match-up. Canada would make it 4-3 but that was all the offense they could manage.

A Goderich Flyers forward, McIntyre will bring back a second career medal at the international stage. Along with brother Cody, the pair earned a silver at the world championships.

In goal for Canada was Mitchell Hawks goalie Graeme Lauersen. He finished his season in Western Junior C to prepare for the event.

The Deaflympics are an International Olympic Committee sanctioned event with deaf or hearing impaired athletes competing at an elite level. It is the longest running multi-sport event after the Olympics. The 2015 edition ran from March 28 to April 5 in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia.
