Legendary driver John Campbell to attend Legends Day at Clinton Raceway

The Clinton Raceway is bringing back Legends Day this year after a 2 year hiatus.

Assistant GM Tony Elliott says the event, to be held June 12th this year, is a biennial fundraiser for a great cause.

"Legends Day is a huge fundraiser for the Clinton Public Hospital Foundation, and it's raised over $260,000 over the existence of the event since Ian Fleming started it. So this year's going to be no different, we have exclusive Legends Day t-shirts for $10, an online silent auction and a 50/50."

The silent online auction launches June 5th until the 10th, and details will be available soon on ClintonRaceway.com. Elliott says this year, Hall of Fame driver and arguably the greatest harness racer ever, John Campbell, will be in attendance for fans to interact with. Joining him will be Bill O’Donnell and Dave Wall.

"Arguably the best driver of all time, he's number one on every list you can find when it comes to driving. Having his final drive here in 2017, it's always really special having him come back. Just always a special day when John Campbell is up and able to hang out with some of the fans."

Campbell is the all-time leader in career earnings as a harness racer with $303 million. In terms of this year's Legends Day race, Elliott says it features a ton of great drivers.

"The lineup for that is Doug Brown, Steve Condren, Wally Hennessey, Trevor Ritchie, Ron Waples, Paul MacDonell and Randy Waples. So you can go down that list and any major race in harness racing has been won by those guys."

All participating drivers have been inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame, with over $1.2 billion in career earnings between them. Elliott says he's hoping that they can surpass the $50,000 raised at the last Legends Day event held back in 2019.

"With it being the first one back and in our rotation, it'll be interesting to see where we're at, but we fully expect it to be right back up or even better than what it was in 2019, so I think it'll be a fantastic event and we encourage everyone to come out, it's the can't miss event of the year here, for sure."
