Sarnia-Lambton recorded a spike of 20 new COVID-19 cases for the second day in a row Sunday, and a new nursing home outbreak has been declared.
On its website Sunday morning Lambton Public Health reported 517 confirmed cases of the virus since March 25th, up 20 since Saturday.
There are 428 resolved cases, up 8, bringing the total of new active cases to 61, an increase of 12.
Since Monday, December 14 there have been 70 new cases reported, the death toll stands at 28 and there are now six outbreaks.
The health unit reported Sunday that it declared an outbreak at Trillium Villa nursing home Saturday after two staff members tested positive for the virus.
Public health said the first steps involve immediately isolating affected individuals and working with the Michigan Avenue home to ensure infection prevention and control measures are maintained or enhanced.
"The individuals who tested positive have been notified of their results and LPH is continuing to conduct case and contact management as part of the investigation," Lambton Public Health said in a statement. "LPH will continue to monitor the situation and work with the stakeholders involved to limit further transmission in the setting and the broader community."
The outbreak is the first in a long-term care home in Lambton since October 30 when one case involving a resident was reported at Fiddick's Retirement Home in Petrolia. It was declared over November 11.
A long-term care or other communal living setting outbreak is declared facility-wide when there is one or more lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases in a staff member or resident, and possible exposure to others in the setting has occurred.
Sunday morning Bluewater Health reported one patient in Sarnia hospital with the virus, unchanged since Saturday.
