City of Sarnia ratifies contracts with three local unions

The City of Sarnia has ratified new collective agreements with three local unions.

Three year contracts have been reached with members of CUPE Local 153, 2713, and 3690 that include wage increases totalling 4.95 per cent.

The unions represent public works, arena, parks, and management employees.

In a news release, Corporate Services GM David Logan said the parties are confident that the terms of the new collective agreements will serve to address the needs of staff and increase operational efficiency and effectiveness.

Jim Bigras, President CUPE Local 153, Jorge Paiva, President CUPE Local 2713, and Doug Downie, President CUPE Local 3690, released a joint statement that said it was a tough round of bargaining.

"Through collaborative efforts of both bargaining teams, we are pleased to have reached a fair three-year agreement that helps us maintain the quality of public services in Sarnia," the statement read. "It’s important that we invest in our community, and that means providing quality jobs to the people who deliver vital services. We appreciate that the City of Sarnia recognized that too in this round of bargaining."

The new agreements came into effect on January 1, 2021 and expire on December 31, 2023.
