The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority (SCRCA) is delaying reservations at three regional campgrounds for the 2022 season.
Manager of Conservation Areas Greg Wilcox said reservations were originally scheduled to open for transient camping at A. W. Campbell, Lorne C. Henderson and Warwick Conservation Areas on January 10.
He said registration will now open March 21.
“Because of the increase in COVID-19 cases and the government response, we are uncertain as to what capacity we will be able to operate our campgrounds this season,” said Wilcox. “We would rather delay accepting reservations than cancel bookings at a later date.”
During the 2020 and 2021 camping seasons the SCRCA limited the availability of transient camping sites and did not allow group camping.
"Two years ago, we had already taken reservations prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and we had to cancel a lot of those to meet capacity restrictions. Last year, we started with a 50 per cent capacity, and just held that for the season. This coming year, we're hoping to be at full capacity, but that will be dependent on restrictions come spring."
Wilcox said they appreciate the patience and understanding from their camping community.
"Between the three sites, there's over 120 overnight camp sites. So, each one of those could be reserved each day, so it accumulates to a lot of reservations to have to go through and do cancellations and changes to."
The decision to delay registrations was made after the provincial government announced January 3 it was reinstating restrictions in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
