Over 2,600 charges were laid in southwestern Ontario during an OPP campaign known as Canada Road Safety Week, held from May 16 until May 22.
OPP targeted the four major contributing factors of fatal or serious collisions on OPP-patrolled roadways.
The "big four" include impaired driving, aggressive driving, failure to wear a seatbelt, and distracted or inattentive driving.
The total number of charges laid this year by West Region OPP was up compared to last year at over 2,400.
Charges laid by West Region OPP during this year's campaign include:
- 1552 speeding charges (51 stunt/racing charges) - 60 impaired driving charges (11 warn-range suspensions) - 94 seatbelt charges - 22 distracting driving charges
OPP's West Region includes 13 detachments and covers areas such as London-Middlesex, Sarnia-Lambton, Chatham-Kent, Windsor-Essex, and Huron County.
