Local women's basketball team makes first appearance at national championships

The Lambton Lions will open the CCAA Women’s Basketball National Championships in Lloydminster, Alberta on Wednesday against The King's University Eagles.

The game will start at 3 p.m. EST.

Head Coach Janine Day said this will be their first time competing on a national level after winning the provincial title on March 3.

After their gold medal win, Day said they took a day off and then returned to regular practices last week.

The team, consisting of 13 players and four coaches, began the trek to Edmonton on March 10 and travelled to Lloydminster on March 11.

"We've had a good talk with the players about enjoying the moment. Obviously, when the games start, we'll be back in that focused mood," said Day. "[For] the first few days, I've told them to just make memories."

Eight teams have qualified for the national championships, the Lambton Lions are the lone team from Ontario. Games will be held through to Saturday.

"If you lose your quarter-final [match] it doesn't mean you're out, so you can come around in the back door and end up winning bronze," said Day. "I think it's due to logistics, you don't want teams flying out there to just get one game, so you're guaranteed a minimum of three games. Some teams may need to play four to win that bronze medal."

Day said the Lions have had loyal fans throughout the season but they appreciate the influx of community support during the playoffs.

"It's nice to see a small community like Sarnia get behind a team that's doing well," she said. "Hoping we can bring home a medal for the community."

Unlike the provincial championships, there is a fee to watch the national championships through a livestream.

The all access pass to livestream every game costs $24.99 and the day pass is $9.99.

However, watch parties will be held at three different locations in Sarnia on Wednesday. Doors will open at 2:30 p.m. at Refined Fool's Sports on London Road, doors open at 12 p.m. at Imperial City Brew House on Exmouth Street, and TVs will be set up in The Lion's Den at Lambton College.
