LKDSB accepting bids for Brooke Central roof replacement

The Lambton Kent District School Board (LKDSB)  is ready to move onto the second phase of roof work at Brooke Central Public School in Alvinston.

Associate Director and Treasurer Brian McKay said they are accepting bids for the project now.

"We've completed the structural reinforcing that was done last year and now phase two, where the tender is out right now, closes in May and that is for the actual roof replacement at Brooke and that will be done over the summer," McKay.

Sections of the school built in 1960 and 1967 and an area built in 2007 -- that housed the daycare and gymnasium -- were closed in November 2022 after structural concerns were raised.

"We did not want to do the structural reinforcing and the roof [replacement] as one project. They really are two separate projects. So, we wanted to go through and make sure that was done," he said.

The ceiling was demolished early last year, structural repairs started in March 2023, and students returned to the building in September.

This time around, McKay said there will be no impact to students in the building.

"Our normal roof replacements always happen in the summer, in July and August, when students aren't in the building," he said. "The tender will close in the middle of May. We will then go to trustees for approval at the end of May and work will be able to commence as soon as the school year is done."

McKay said the roof was last replaced in two sections, with the first section in 1998 and the last section in 2005.

This time just over half of the school's roof will be replaced.
