United Way campaign sets its sights on the 50 per cent mark

The Sarnia-Lambton United Way is appealing for donors to help them reach the halfway mark of its fundraising campaign.

Director of Development and Communications Ryan Doyle said heading into week five of the fundraising initiative, they've collected $650,320, which is 44 per cent of the $1.487 million goal.

He said the agency is reaching out to past donors.

"So it's our second round of direct mailers going out, so physical mailers that are going to people's houses," said Doyle. "And we're trying something a little new, it's not just the standard letter they get asking for them to pledge their donation. We're sending out kind of a more outcomes based sheet that talks about the different programs that we do and where the results are so how many people served, and what percentage of success rate we have with our different programs."

A total of 17 local agencies receive funding from the United Way including Lambton Elderly Outreach, Sarnia-Lambton Rebound and River City Vineyard.

Doyle said it's a busy week for the campaign.

"We're wrapping up some of the industry campaigns, but we're kicking off some other industry campaigns," he said. "Suncor is doing their parking lot auction where they have parking spaces that they auction off, it's awesome. The Coast Guard are doing their Chili Cook Off on Wednesday and school board campaigns are still going on."

Doyle said they're also continuing to prepare for the first ever Novemburger.

So far, about 20 local restaurants have signed on and will feature a special hamburger on its menu next month in support of the United Way.
