No Charges In Sun-Canadian Pipelines Spill

Sun-Canadian Pipelines will not be charged following a pipeline spill in Sarnia's south end in September 2013.

Approximately 35,000 litres of diesel fuel spilled when a section of pipeline owned by the company ruptured near the Vidal St. - Churchill Rd. intersection.

Environment Ministry spokesperson Kate Jordan says they reviewed Sun-Canadian's spill and contingency plan and directed the company to update the plans to prevent a leak from happening again.

Jordan says the cleanup was done properly and to ministry standards.

Some of the fuel leaked into the St Clair River via the Cole Drain, prompting Wallaceburg and Walpole Island to close down their water intakes.

Repairs took several weeks.

The Environment Ministry and several other high level agencies including the Technical Standards and Safety Authority and the National Energy Board were involved in the investigation into the mishap.
