Environment Canada has issued a winter storm warning for southern Ontario for Super Bowl Sunday and into Groundhog Day Monday.
A developing winter storm from Colorado will track across the region causing hazardous conditions.
Snow will continue through Sunday and into Monday morning with total accumulations of 15 cm to 25 cm, (6-10 in) although higher amounts may be possible especially near the Great Lakes. Gusty northeast winds Sunday afternoon and evening will reduce visibilities to 0.5 km or less in blowing snow. The combination of snow and blowing snow will make for hazardous travelling conditions.
Meteorologist Desjanelle Matthews says the snow should taper off in the early morning in the extreme southwest with accumulations specific to Sarnia-Lambton of 15 cm to 20 cm.
The national weather agency recommends postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.
Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow. Take extra care when walking or driving in affected areas.
Public Safety Canada encourages everyone to make an emergency plan and get an emergency kit with drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit and a flashlight.
