Bradley Wary Of Provincial Power Play

Sarnia's mayor is wary of a recommendation in the province's government assets report that would encourage Ontario cities to get out of the electricity business.

Ed Clark's report recommends the temporary removal of an onerous tax that sees the province collect about one third of the selling price of local utilities.

Removing the tax would provide incentive for municipalities to sell utilities like Bluewater Power to private companies as a means of generating funds to help pay down debt or invest in infrastructure.

Mayor Mike Bradley still thinks it's a better deal for the city to remain the major shareholder in Bluewater Power.

End delivery charges account for over one-third of the total residential bill and Mayor Bradley is worried selling Bluewater Power could result in higher rates in the six local municipalities served by the utility.
