20th Anniversary Of Ipperwash Shooting

This Sunday marks the 20th anniversary of the shooting death of native protester Dudley George at Ipperwash Provincial Park.

George was shot and killed by OPP officer Ken Deane who was subsequently convicted of criminal negligence causing death.

Protesters had occupied the park two days earlier to draw attention to a decades-old land claim.

After a lengthy public inquiry that began in November 2003, Justice Sidney Linden issued a final report containing 100 recommendations in May 2007.

The province of Ontario's website says most of the recommendations have been carried out or are in the process of being addressed.

Kettle and Stony Point Chief Tom Bressette disagrees, saying the majority of the recommendations have not been acted upon.

He says neither the park nor the former Camp Ipperwash have been transferred to First Nation control.
