Shell Invests In Future Careers Of Students

A donation by Shell Canada will help Lambton College increase future enrollment in its trades and technology programs.

The $240,000 donation will provide interactive learning experiences to encourage Aboriginal youth, women, and Grade 9 and 10 students to consider career pathways they may not have otherwise considered.

A Mobile Technology Trailer, equipped with interactive tools and learning features, will transport new programs to local high schools and First Nations communities.

Associate Dean of Apprenticeship and Trades Training Jeff Murrell says a Women in Trades event will promote more gender neutral roles in the community.

"It's unfortunate that most young women don't see themselves as being capable of doing those types of things," says Murrell . "I think that by exposing them to different opportunities and allowing them to find what speaks to them will allow them to make those proper choices."

General Manager of Shell Sarnia Manufacturing Karen Miller says it's an investment in future generations of employees.

"If we can set our youth on the right path early, then we will have a whole generation of more successful individuals, which will benefit our society overall," says Miller. "I think it's a huge step forward, especially getting kids while they're making those critical decisions."

Shell has made 96 co-op positions available to Lambton College students at its Sarnia complex since 2012.

Lambton College President Judith Morris, college foundation members and Shell representatives gathered on campus at noon Thursday for a presentation formally recognizing the company's donation.
