Winter Fire Safety

Sarnia Fire and Rescue Services is reminding residences to keep fire safety in mind as the temperature drops.

Fire Life Safety Educator Mike Otis says they often see more home fires during the winter months due to heating equipment and appliances.

He says people need to pay close attention to potential fire hazards such as fireplaces, furnaces, space heaters, chimneys and vents.

Fire codes require working smoke alarms to be located on every storey and outside all sleeping areas of a home.

Residents are reminded to warm their running vehicles up outside of their garage and to keep furnace vents free of ice and snow buildup to reduce risks of carbon monoxide.
