Bluewater Power is looking to expand into the internet services sector.
Sarnia councillors are being asked Monday to allow the utility to pursue a business opportunity within a fibre communications network.
Mayor Mike Bradley says previous restrictions on municipally owned utilities will be eliminated when the province's Bill 112 passes later this month.
"Almost 40 per cent of their income now is from non-related distribution activities," says Bradley. "I think council would applaud and I think the community should applaud that Bluewater Power is being very forward thinking in trying to diversify their income."
Bradley adds the utility needs the approval of one other shareholder besides the City of Sarnia, but expects that would happen as it will enhance community infrastructure and bring in a return on investment.
City staff say the investment in a fibre communications network will financially benefit Bluewater Power, its shareholders, the community and economic development.
