Drunk Driving Could Cost Big Bucks

Sarnia police are urging motorists to "arrive alive" by driving responsibly for New Year's Eve.

Constable Mark Berger has calculated all fees involved, which totals over $25,000.

He says the first fee is for towing the vehicle, and the cost for a week-long vehicle impoundment.

"Your license is suspended on the Administrator Drivers License Suspension program and that's a 90-day ADLS suspension. So right off the get go, before court, before anything, your license is gone for 90 days," he says.

If convicted, the minimum fine is $1,000 and a one year license suspension.

Insurance fees could jump by about $6,000 a year for three years, and if they so choose, drunk drivers could pay up to $10,000 in lawyers fees.

Options instead of drinking and driving include taking a cab, arranging for a designated driver, or taking Sarnia Transit.
