Legionnaires Lose To First Place Flyers

The Sarnia Legionnaires (21-18-2-3) dropped a hard fought 4-2 decision at the hands of the first place Leamington Flyers (35-6-1-0) in GOJHL hockey action Saturday night at Sarnia Arena.

Mark Gangnon got the Flyers on the board just 3:05 into the first period off a give away in front of the Sarnia net. Zach Guilbeault made it a 2-0 game on a feed from Cale Phibbs at 16:44.

Sarnia stormed back with a pair of goals 37 seconds apart off the sticks of Konnor Roskovich and Brandon Layman. Jordan Fogarty and Sam McCormack each picked up helpers.

After a scoreless second frame, the Flyers pulled ahead 3-2 on a controversal goal by defenceman Nicolas Mainella 8:42 into the third. The Legionnaires argued goaltender interference on the play but to no avail.

Colin Moore sealed the victory for Leamington with less than a minute left in the game.

Legionnaires goalie Shayne Battler made 20 saves on 23 shots while Tyler Wall made 22 saves on 24 shots in the Leamington net.

Sarnia's powerplay was held scoreless on six chances.

The Legionnaires sit 6th in the Western Conference with 47 points, four back of both LaSalle and St. Thomas.

The Legionnaires' next game is Friday night in St. Marys.
