Enniskillen Township Considers 9.8% Tax Increase

Enniskillen Township Council will consider a $2.86-million budget during deliberations Tuesday evening.

The budget, about $148,000 more than last year, would be a 9.8% increase for landowners, or 4.33% when county and education tax levies are factored in.

Mayor Kevin Marriott says it's the fourth year in a row for provincial funding cutbacks.

"We've been losing 15% a year from that, and on top of that is the landfill royalties that will come to an end this year when the landfill closes in May."

Enniskillen Township was receiving revenue from an agreement with Petrolia, since the waste management site bordered the municipality.

Mayor Marriott expects cutbacks will be made to roadwork, the township's largest expenditure.

"4.3% is twice the rate of inflation and that's too much."

Other large expenditures include employee wages, recreation, and the township's waste disposal fees.

Budget deliberations begin at 7pm.
