OPP Urge Drivers To Buckle Up

Ontario Provincial Police say men are more likely to drive without their seat belt when compared to women.

According to police statistics, 332 people were killed in crashes over the last five years and men accounted for 261 of the deaths.

Lambton OPP Constable Chris Doupe says that from those deaths, men are four times more likely not to fasten a seat belt.

"The set fine for either a driver or passenger not properly wearing the seat belt assembly is $240 and three points through the Ministry of Transportation," he says.

Police will be monitoring the streets over the Easter long weekend as part of their Spring Seatbelt Campaign.

They will be on patrol looking for reckless drivers, impaired driving and to see if people are wearing a seatbelt.

Police have issued 1,276 seat belt violations to drivers from 2011-2015.
