Refugee Wait Drags On

The Sarnia Interfaith Refugee Partnership is urging Ottawa to speed up the process to get more Syrian refugees to Canada.

Ann Steadman says the Lambton Anglican Refugee Committee has rented and furnished a home for a family of six. They're ready to travel but the federal government has yet to complete all the paperwork.

"We're basically asking the government to take another look at what their targets are for refugees for 2016," she says. "We're asking them to ensure there is enough personnel on the ground overseas to get things moving again."

There are already over two dozen Syrian refugees in Sarnia-Lambton but Steadman is worried if the delay for others drags on, some would-be sponsors may disband or have to raise more money to cover accommodation rental costs.
