Oil Spill Exercise On St. Clair River

There will be a full-scale oil spill simulation on the St. Clair River Wednesday.

United States Coast Guard Sector Detroit spokesman Rick Loster says first responders from both sides of the border will be involved.

"This is a government led exercise," says Loster. "We'll also have members of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Homeland Security because all three of those agencies are signatures to the area contingency plan on the U.S. side."

The Canadian Coast Guard and the National Energy Board will also be involved in the exercise which will simulate a significant oil spill from an Enbridge pipeline running under the river.

The company will also be bringing in numerous personnel and equipment with three booming points established. One will be at the Mooretown gravel pit, the other two in the Marysville, Michigan area.
